Description

When the Montreal Protocol was signed in 1987, few alternatives to ozone depleting substances were available or even imagined. Industry feared that technical progress would be slow, that costs would be exorbitant, that valuable equipment would be abandoned, and that safety might be compromised. As it turned out, these dire predictions were never realized. In fact, in many cases the new technologies are now more energy efficient, maintenance is more automated, and systems are more reliable than those based on CFCs. We are honored to contribute to the ASHRAE Journal celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol and to have the opportunity to document some of the extraordinary individual, association, and corporate contributions to the remarkable success of this important global treaty.
