Report / Survey by ASHRAE, 2015

Description

This report presents results from a research project funded by both the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE) and the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The research is sponsored by ASHRAE TC 6.3 on Central Forced Air Heating and Cooling Systems. The stated objective of the research is to provide a firmer rational basis for the selection of a public domain computer modeling software that can be used to simulate the complex behavior of ducted air distribution systems used for space conditioning in residential and small commercial buildings. This objective is elicited by recent findings that forced air distribution systems often waste, through air leakage, 20% to 40% of the energy used to condition building spaces, in the process often causing health and safety concerns through the creation of uncontrolled air flows and pressures in buildings.
