RP-1360 — How Do Pressure Drop, Efficiency, Weight Gain, and Loaded Dust Composition Change throughout Filter Lifetime

$15.00

Report / Survey by ASHRAE,

Category:

Description

Under contract with the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), RTI International (RTI) conducted research and testing to investigate the nature of dust collected on general ventilation air filters and how the filters' performance changes over time due at least in part to the collection of that dust. In addition to measurements of performance, a survey form was used to collect information on the filters' installation, HVAC operation, exposure to particle sources, and ambient conditions.

The primary objectives of the project were to:

  • Investigate the performance of in-situ filters over their lifetimes for pressure drop, dust weight gain and changes in filtration efficiency.
  • Compare standard ASHRAE 52.2-2007 testing, with and without Appendix J conditioning, to the in-situ filter performance. Also compare ASHRAE Guideline 26-2008 field tests to laboratory testing.
  • Investigate the nature of the dust collected on filters. This included the dust's elemental composition, organic and inorganic carbon content, particle morphology, the presence of fibers, and dust color.

  • For each in-situ filter, collect information using a survey form completed by the user on filter's use, HVAC operation, and general ambient conditions relevant to exposure of the filter to particulate contaminants.
