Conference Proceeding by ASHRAE, 2016

Category:

Description

One of the primary noise transmission paths in buildingsis from HVAC equipment through ventilation ducts.ASHRAEHandbook—HVAC Applications provides tables for estimatingthe attenuation of lined and unlined ducts up to 10 ft (3.05m) in length. The aim of this research is to suggest and validatea finite element approach which can be used to determine theattenuation of ducts of any length and dimension. Theapproach detailed simulates the standard measurementapproaches for assessing duct attenuation. The duct air space, including the source and termination, is modeled using acousticfinite elements. Poroelastic finite elements are used to simulatethe fiber lining, and the metal ductwork is modeled usingstructural finite elements. The model is used to determine theinsertion and transmission losses of unlined and lined ducts.Predicted results are compared to measurements with goodagreement.
