Description

A large volume chilled water storage was incorporated into the systems serving Robson Square and Courthouse in Vancouver, B.C. Robson Square and the Courthouse cover three city blocks with the building involving 110,340 m2 (1,187,265 ft2). The chilled water storage facility is a 3300 m3 (870,000 U.S. gal) atmospheric pressure concrete tank which is used to reduce electrical demand and to allow reduction of installed mechanical cooling capacity.

The tank design was based on a stratification principle developed in model testing in a hydraulics laboratory. The tank is in operation and field results indicate an installed cooling capacity of 4200 kW (1200 tons) which is more than adequate to handle the 7000 kW (2000 tons) peak loading.
