Description

The BART system is composed of approximately 71 miles of double track rail rapidtransit routes serving San Francisco and, via a tube beneath San Francisco Bay, thecities of Oakland and the East Bay counties of Alameda and Contra Costa. Nineteenmiles of this trackway is underground. This does not include the Trans-Bay Tubewhich is 3.6 miles long. The subway is protected by 96 axial fans. The fans are75 to 84 inches in diameter, rated at 120,000 to 140,000 cfm (3,400 to 4,000 cubicmeters per minute) at 2 inches (5.08 em) of water and are operated by 85 to 100horsepower reversible motors. A performance curve of one of these fans is shown inFigure 1.

Since these fans are installed mainly for emergency use, they must be highly reliable.Their reliability is obtained by testing and maintenance. Of equal importance istheir proper operating mode during an emergency. At BART we have established tests,a preventative maintenance program and an operating procedure that will enable thefans to perform during an emergency.
