Description

The development of an automotive compressor is considerably different from the development of a stationary refrigeration compressor. Not only are the normal aspects of refrigeration compressor design involved, but the added constraints of the dynamic vehicular application also must be accounted for in the development, program. These constraints include infinite speed variations, rapid cycling operation, extreme vibration levels, extreme condensing temperature operation, and finite life determinations.

This paper discusses the laboratory testing required to properly evaluate a design to qualify for the rigorous constraints of an automotive application. Performance evaluations, endurance evaluations, vibration evaluations, and peripheral tests are discussed. The paper is the result of the successful completion of a development program of a new domestic automotive compressor.
