AC-02-17-2 — Design and Assessment of a Very Large-Scale CFD Industrial Ventilation Flowfield Simulation

$7.50

Conference Proceeding by ASHRAE, 2002

Category:

Description

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is gaining use in simulating distributions of ventilation air in building interior environments. As high-performance computing matures, the ability to address industrial-scale problems emerges. This paper presents design and solution adequacy assessments for a five million node CFD prediction of the mixed ventilation flow field in an industrial facility. The two-story plant footprint approximates a football field, and the interior contains over 100 geometrical/thermal entities requiring detailed meshing definition. Simulation design decisions and software selections lead to construction of a nonconformal block meshing, domain-decomposed for parallel execution. The paper details the simulation decision process and interprets the generated solution for flow details and assessments of solution quality.
