Conference Proceeding by ASHRAE, 2002

Description

The performance of a new control system that includes a wireless mobile thermostat and its impact on energy conservation and comfort were investigated. The mobile thermostat’s prototype system was manufactured, installed, and tested during one year in a two-story residential townhouse with a central furnace and forced-air system. The modes of operation of space heating and space cooling systems with stationary and mobile thermostats were compared and analyzed. Control of the heating/cooling systems with a stationary thermostat leads to significant vertical air temperature variations between the second and the first floors, as well as horizontal temperature variations within a floor. The mobile thermostat is suggested for utilization in order to optimize climate control strategy and save energy in residential houses. Annual energy savings for a New England average household are evaluated at about 6% with a simple payback for the new device in approximately two years.
