Description
The office environment combines typical environmental factors such as heat, light, and sound. How these factors affect workability was determined by factorial analysis of subjective responses from office occupants under controlled conditions. The environmental conditions of the study were: room ambient temperatures of 19°C to 29°C (66.2°F to 84.2°F), desktop illuminance of 75 lx to 1500 lx, and equivalent sound pressure levels of 40 dBA to 60 dBA. The study used a standardized routine to simulate typical office work that consisted of inputting a visual display terminal and manipulating the data. Sixteen subjects participated in the test during which their responses to eight conditions (thermal discomfort, work suitability, fatigue, etc.) were recorded. The “work suitability” of combinations of sound, luminance, and temperature for the office were evaluated through correlation between the sensations and environmental factors.
