2930 (RP-268) — Test Method for Gaseous Contaminant Removal Devices

Conference Proceeding by ASHRAE, 1985

Category:

Description

A method was developed to assist HVAC engineers in the design and evaluation of devices and control media used in removal of gaseous contaminants from airstreams. The method employs pilot and full-scale tests. Pilot-scale equipment makes it possible to test various control media under identical conditions. The full-scale test duct is used for direct comparison of various commercially available devices. A concept of accelerated loading of a control medium was evaluated. This technique exposes a control medium to higher concentrations of contaminant for a shorter time than under actual use conditions. Tests with activated carbon as adsorbent and dimethyl sulfide as contaminant revealed that desorption precludes the use of the concept on such reversible type systems. The concept was found applicable to the irreversible type systems in which the contaminant is irreversibly cpatured by the control medium. Effects of termperature and humidity on the efficiency of two widely different control media were evaluated.
