Description
In establishing the environmental criteria for spaces, the mechanical engineer must predict final results on the basis of laboratory performance ratings for the components that influence the results. The steps taken to provide reliable and repeatable prediction of the effect of the individual sound sources in the conditioned spaces will be examined. This includes procedures and test standards that are available and used for the determination of the laboratory data that is necessary to initiate the calculation of the end result. The scope of the paper is limited to the sound sources and their transmission paths associated with the diffusion and distribution of air to, within, and from contiguous spaces. Noise transmitted through the structure from either the outside or the central apparatus is recognized but not considered.
The rationale behind a simplified and uniform room attenuation value is explored and compared with test data observed with both single and multiple sound sources in typical spaces. This correlation may not be valuable to the acoustical expert charged with the task of establishing results in a complex environment, but it does validate the selection of equipment for the mechanical consultant in typical commercial applications. These latter selections constitute the largest use of air diffusing and distribution equipment and by their number should be assured of a good and satisfactory comfort environment.
