Description

This paper describes a computer program written to calculate the heat transfer performance of a flooded refrigerant evaporator. The program is based on a theoretical model developed by Webb et al. (1989). The program is used to predict the performance of four commercial evaporators, and the predicted and experimental results are compared. The utility of the program is illustrated by using it to predict the effect of internal geometry changes, including the use of enhanced boiling tubes. The model underpredicted the full-load heat duty of the four commercial evaporators by 6% to 11%. Graphs are also presented to show the variation of the shell-side heat transfer and pressure drop parameters over the depth of the tube bundle.
