Description

This paper discusses the design of new egg-crate-type evaporators that are now used in the vapor compression cycle based modern domestic refrigerators and freezers. The evaporators work in counter/parallel cross-flow configuration. This paper presents a steady-state simulation model that has been developed to predict the heat transfer performance of these evaporators. The model is based on the NTU- e method, following an elemental approach. It has been validated with experimental data of two different evaporators tested in a specifically designed wind tunnel at different airflow rates. The finning factors and the Reynolds numbers of the tested evaporators ranged from 6.7 and 7.3 and 600 to 1100, respectively. The model results agreed with the experimental measurements to within ±10%.
