Description
This paper describes two case studies of construction projects inside operating hospitals that involved extensive above-ceiling work. Both projects were successfully completed due to stringent infection control design, cooperative hospital staff, and application of engineering controls. It is concluded that recording and documenting of differential pressure monitoring should be required on all projects where work isolation is specified for dust control. Aerosol monitoring and bioaerosol sampling are recommended when work is adjacent to highrisk patients. One significant impact of stringent infection control policies in health care is that any work above ceilings, even repair or maintenance activities, should conducted in unoccupied areas or with isolation techniques to contain patient exposure to contaminants.
