Conference Proceeding by ASHRAE, 2000

Description

This paper develops guidelines for achieving capital cost economies in the application of cooling thermal storage. The guidelines address both the early identification of suitable applications and opportunities for capital cost reduction. Three constructed projects are presented as case studies. The case study projects utilize both stratified chilled water thermal storage and ice thermal storage in combination with low-temperature air supply. By discussing the case studies, the factors that contributed to the competitive capital cost of the thermal storage systems are presented. In addition, more generalized factors are discussed. By using the guidelines presented, design engineers will be better prepared to recognize applications early in the design process, where cooling thermal storage may offer capital (and operating) cost economies. This ability will contribute to the wider application of cooling thermal storage technologies.
