NO-94-06-1 — A Database for Determining the Decrease in Clothing Insulation Due to Body Motion

$7.50

Conference Proceeding by ASHRAE, 1994

Category:

Description

Insulation values for 24 indoor clothing ensembles were measured with the use of a thermal manikin (1) standing and (2) walking. Equations for predicting the absolute change in insulation due to movement were developed using clothing air volume, weight, the amount of body surface area covered by clothing, the standing insulation value, and walking speed as independent variables. Equations for predicting dynamic insulation directly (i.e., without the need for a standing clo value) were developed. The information given can be used to estimate the reduction in clothing insulation values at elevated activity levels. Thus, predictions of the thermal comfort of active persons made with ASHRAE Standard 55 or ISO 7730 should be more realistic.
