3134 — The Prospect of Incorporating Desuperheaters to Room Air-Conditioners for Tropical Application

Description

The effect of energy recovery on the performance of a room air-conditioner and the possible amount of energy recovery, when the energy is used for domestic water heating, have been studied by using a computer model. It was found that energy recovery improved the performance of the air conditioner. A popularly sized room air conditioner of 11,000 Btu/h (3.22 kW) rated cooling capacity, having a reciprocating hermatic compressor and capillary tube expansion device, was used in the study. It was found that energy recovery reduced the refrigerant mass flow rate and power consumption, and the cooling capacity was approximately maintained, except at high energy recovery rate. However, if energy is to be recovered from the nighttime operation alone in Singapore, or other places in the tropics with similar weather, it may not be possible to recover enough energy to meet the entire water-heating requirement of a private home.
