Description

Recent years have seen an increased demand for post-occupancy Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) evaluation alongside energy use;however, the tools available for this type of evaluation are typically “point-in-time” assessments that cannot provide a complete picture of IEQ, itsperception by occupants over time, or the nature of its relationship to productivity, adaptive behavior, and energy consumption outcomes. Alongitudinal approach that surveys the same occupants repeatedly over time can yield more comprehensive information. This paper presents alongitudinal occupant IEQ survey protocol and demonstrates its implementation across 8 months in a green office buiding context. Thelongitudinal protocol addresses subject recruitment; development, distribution, and revision of daily survey questions; and integration of surveyresponses with corresponding datalogger streams. Results show that the daily survey instruments generated consistently high response rates, tookminimal time to complete, and were evaluated positively by participants in the study. It is furthermore shown that the longitudinal protocol allowssurvey responses to be cross-checked against logger data, ensuring the accuracy of the various information streams, and that the final set oflongitudinal data can be used to direct building operation strategies towards when and where IEQ issues are likely to arise.
