Description

A series of tests has been completed comparing the system performance of refrigerant R134a (an HFC) with two different near azeotropic mixtures of R134a and R152a (an HFC). The tests were carried out under controlled conditions in a well-instrumented water/heater heat pump test facility using an open-drive reciprocating compressor and counterflow heat exchangers. R134a and mixtures of R134a/R152a were tested and data used to compare important performance characteristics including evaporator capacity, cooling coefficient of performance (COP), refrigerant mass flow, compressor shaft power, compressor efficiency, and overall heat transfer coefficient within the evaporator. The tests covered an evaporating temperature range of -15.5 degC to 9.0 degC (4.1 degF to 48.2 degF), with a constant condensing temperature of 51.5 degC (124.7 degF). Test results are compared on the basis of a 12.0 degC (21.6 degF) condenser liquid subcooling. The refrigerant superheat was maintained at 7.4 degC (13.3 degF) throughout the tests. The paper also includes a brief description of the test facility and the measurement techniques used.
