RP-493 — A Study to Determine the Concentration of Ethylene Glycol and Propylene Glycol Necessary to Provide Burst Protection for HVAC Systems

$15.00

Report / Survey by ASHRAE, 1992

Category:

Description

A study was conducted to develop guidelines for the burst protection provided by glycol solutions (Craig et. al. 1992). These guidelines are summarized in the attached figures. The data shown are intended to be guidelines for heat exchanger equipment which has unlimited volume expansion capability (e.g. connected directly to piping above the ice point temperature). They were collected with rapid cooling and thus may be conservative for equipment exposed to slow cooling (e.g. overnight). However, they may not apply to equipment that is subjected to extremely high cooling rates (e.g. fan coil unit with fan operating). The data apply only to static conditions where there is no liquid flow through the equipment. They should not be applied to dynamic conditions where there is a continuous liquid flow.
